Packaging Microfilm for Storage
Enclose
microfilm
in containers free from damaging chemicals.
Peroxide free plastic containers
are required for microfilm deposited into the
Security Copy Depository.
Don't use
paper or metal containers.
Use a paper band
to restrain microfilm on the cores.
Don't use rubber bands. Paper bands must meet the requirements of ANSI IT9.2-1991: For Imaging Media - Photographic Processed Films, Plates, and Papers - Filing Enclosures and Storage Containers. According to these requirements,
storage containers must
be made of acid-free, lignin-free paper. In most cases, no restraint is necessary. Over-winding the microfilm can cause scratches or breaks in the emulsion. Winding the microfilm too loosely can warp it inside its enclosure.
Reels should conform to ANSI/AIIM MS 34-1990: Dimensions for Reels Used for 16 mm and 35 mm microfilm. They must be
constructed of inert plastic or noncorrosive metal. Only these reels are suitable for storage of security microfilm. Cassettes, cartridges
or other types of proprietary user formats aren't recommended for security microfilm. Roll microfilm is the only acceptable format for microfilm being deposited in the long-term or permanent vaults of the Security Copy Depository.
For more information, read ANSI standards.
