The Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) administers retirement benefits for Oregon’s public sector workers (state, local government and school district employees). PERS serves more than 228,000 active/inactive members, 156,000 benefit recipients, and 906 employers. The system pays approximately $4.86 billion in benefits annually; about $4.08 billion is paid to Oregon residents. Those in-state payments support an estimated 36,914 jobs in Oregon. Investment income provided 74.2% of total PERS revenue since 1970, with member contributions providing 4.3%, and employer contributions providing 21.5%. Nearly 30% of PERS members are currently eligible to retire.
