The commission consists of seven members appointed by the governor for staggered, four-year terms. One commissioner must be from each congressional district, one from east of the Cascades and one from west of the Cascades.
Commissioners formulate general state programs and policies concerning management and conservation of fish and wildlife resources and establish seasons, methods and bag limits for recreational and commercial take.

The department is charged by statute to protect and propagate fish in the state. This includes direct responsibility for regulating the harvest, protection and enhancement of fish populations through habitat improvement and the rearing and release of fish into public waters. ODFW maintains hatcheries throughout the state to provide fish for program needs.

The division leads proactive, focused, and consistent efforts to protect, restore, and enhance habitat for Oregon’s fish and wildlife. The division provides technical assistance to landowners, regulatory agencies, and the public on land and water development actions to ensure fish and wildlife habitat are sustained in a manner consistent with ODFW’s mission. The division also provides technical and financial assistance to public and private land managers to restore and enhance fish and wildlife habitats.

This division directs and provides all communications and education services for the department. These services include strategic outreach programs, informational campaigns, media and public relations communications, social media, public involvement activities, special events, hunter education programs, aquatic and angler education programs, additional education activities, creation of publications and videos and website management.
Oregon Conservation and Recreation Fund

The Legislature created the Oregon Conservation and Recreation Fund as a way for Oregonians to help protect and enhance wildlife species and their habitats. The fund also creates new opportunities for wildlife watching, urban conservation, community science, and other wildlife-associated recreation. The Oregon Conservation and Recreation Advisory Committee advises the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission on spending from the Fund.

The division has direct responsibility for monitoring the numbers and health of wildlife species, setting population conservation and management objectives, overseeing wildlife habitat restoration and maintenance and regulating harvest of game animals. The Oregon Conservation Strategy is a key part of the division and guides voluntary actions to conserve wildlife on public and private land.
